My 07 ranger has the 5r55e and was having problems with the transfer case. So i pulled it to rebuild it. Something i noticed after I pulled it was putting the truck into drive (without the transfer case mounted to the trans) the speed jumps all over the place 20-80. Could this just be the vss? or should i just break down and pull the whole unit for a complete rebuild? Anyone ever have this happen? Fix one issue and another pops up lol. Truck has 430k or 267,000 ish miles.

The Output Shaft Speed Sensor might just be wobbling because the stabilization of being connected to the transfer case wasn't there.
This is a guess.
