83 Ranger 4x4 302 trans swap

Alright, I just bought a 83 Ranger 4x4 that has a 302 with an auto trans with no reverse. I was told that it just needed a pin in it and it would be a 15 min job. Well I took the pan off today to check it out and had to pull the valve body to see anything. With the valve body two other pieces fell out. I got to looking around and seen that the low-reverse band had a piece broke off (no wonder there is no reverse) so now I need to decide if I should replace the band or just put a 4 speed in it. The truck came from the factory with a manual transmission and was converted over to auto with the 302. It still has the hydrolic clutch reservoir on the fire wall and the clutch linkage on the inside but that is about all that is left of the parts from the manual trans. Although the autoshifter is mounted in the floor so it still has the whole for the shifter. How hard would it to be to change the truck back to manual and what transmission should I use if I do. Or would it be easier to just replace the low reverse band in the c4? Thanks for any help.

Also, do I need to pull the transmission apart to replace the band? Or can I pull the band out and put the new one in going through the trans pan opening with the valve body out and the adjusters back off? I really dont want to pull the transmission.
