89 4x4 Mitsu FM146 overdrive and reverse

Transmission locked up. Removed shifter, cap, sheet metal, transmission lid.... I lined up all three rails in neutral, that is the engaging slots all lined up. All seem to slide forward and rearward. But the overdrive/reverse rail also rotates clockwise when viewed from above and facing forwards. Once rotated clockwise, the shift tang can't reach the slots..... I don't guess the rail should rotate. Am I correct? Please advise before I pull tranny out only to learn that's not the problem.... thanks redranger1989

No, it shouldn't rotate, the shift fork(on the dog gear) is either broken or it's pin on the shaft is sheared off.

The shifter slot on the rail remains vertical because shift fork on each dog gear holds it at that angle, all 3 dog gears are on the output shaft so can't move up or down only forward or back, so if shift slot on that rail can rotate off vertical it means it is no longer supported by shift fork.

all fixed

As Ron suggested, the roll pin was at fault.... But happily it hadn't sheared. The pin had worked itself almost totally loose but had not yet come completely free of its hole. Best of all - the pin was immediately obvious when the trans was split in half.... a few taps and all was well..... Should I have replaced the roll pin? Should I have removed it and opened it up a bit? We'll see - hopefully after several hundred thousand miles..... Thanks again to Ron....

Thanks for the "thanks" and the update, good work on getting it fixed.

Pin should stay in place for at least as long as it did when first installed, so...........what was the mileage at when it came loose?
