98 reg cab 2wd 5 speed to 4wd

Ok well I am new to this site and fairly new to owning a ranger love the truck and would like to do more to it. my question what is the best route to take to converting my truck to 4wd. I don't a crazy full blown rock crawler but I would like to add four wheel drive system that works good for the weekend wheeling fun and such. new to rangers and not sure where to start on this project all ideas welcome.

Basically you want to find a '90-'95 ranger or bronco II with good front axle and MANUAL SHIFT transfer case.
Borg Warner 1354 Mechanical
Ranger, Bronco II 1990-1995

Electric shift would require quite a bit of rewiring and most people with electric shift WISH they had manual shift, lol.

If you have a manual trans now then you can swap tail shafts to add the 1354, if an Automatic the transmission needs to be taken apart to add the transfer case.

Look at the sticker on your drivers door edge, it will have an AXLE code.
Then look here to see what your rear axle gearing is: Ford 7.5 & 8.8 Inch Axle Tag & Door Codes

4.10, 3.73, 3.55, ect....

The new front axle will need to be the same gearing, in all probability you will have to change one axles gears, if your rear is not Limited Slip(posi-traction) then upgrading to that and matching front axle gears would be best plan.

You may need a different oil pan??
Can't remember if 2WD was different than 4WD

Yes mine is manual tranny and a manual shift transfer case is what I was planning on going with. not a fan of the electric shift. As far as rear axle that is in the plans to switch gears Kinda figured I would have to anyways so front and back is the same. thanks for the info very helpful.
