Have a 99 4x4, had friend pull up on side of truck when traveling down hwy and said that he heard a clicking noise like a chain on a dirt bike or 4 wheeler. I'am thinking cv shafts? How can test the shafts?
just crawl under you truck and see if it has alot of play in it,it will move a little but it shouldnt move much
On the 99 with its auto hubs they should never be spinning unless in 4wd. You should be able to turn the front drive shaft by hand with all 4 tires on the ground and the truck in park.
You should check your rear drive shaft ujoints and front wheel bearings. Its really hard to diagnose a noise over the internet.

what mine used to do, the pilot bearing in the center of the wheel bearing was bad, so the cv axle had up and down play where it goes into the bearing and it made a jingling noise when i went over bumps
thanks for the help , I did change the u-joints on the drive shaft about 2 months ago, I didn't think of that. May be front wheel bearings. Will check these out tonight, thanks
Cv shafts don't spin in park, front bearings seam fine no noticable play, did find torsion bar rod with no bushings left bought replacement and will install tonight to see if this is possibley the culprit. Any other thoughts are appreciated.
