94 ranger trans/clutch issues

i have recently purchased a 2.3L, 2x4, 5 speed 1994 ford ranger...
after driving it a short period of time i noticed a winding noise (sounded like a bearing) when the clutch was disengaged. So a had planned on looking into that the next night when i had some time... I was heading home from work down the interstate in 5th at a steady rpm, and just about 2 miles from my exit i suddenly noticed that i had lost power to the wheels and my rpms where increasing (like it came outta gear). so instinctively I clutched and tried pushing it back into 5th, decompressed clutch and nothing (neutral). so i thought id try and drop down into 4th to get off of the busy highway. it came out of 5th fine, but did not slide into 4th like it should, but w/ some wiggling and a little force it poped in. as soon as I started to release and grab 4th, there was a loud bang and a jerk from the rear wheels (like they wanted to momentarily lock up). as soon as i heard and felt that i jumped back on the clutch and just coasted to a stop near my exit. i had to hold the cluch down while towing it 4 miles to my home. it now acts like it is stuck in 4th and i cant seem to get it out. ..... I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and advise as to (A) what the problem is, whats broken and (B) how to at least get it out of gear so it can roll.. thankyou folks
