Adjustable Clutch?

97 Ranger XLT with 2.3, 4..114,000 miles...

My clutch is releasing near the top of the pedal, not slipping or anything just releasing high....can this be adjusted or is the clutch on it's way out?

Thanks for any input!

Clutch disc is near end-of-life most likely, it will start to slip pretty soon

No, there is no adjustment, it has an internal slave

When you replace the clutch use a self-adjusting pressure plate, just a heads up, they are better with new clutch discs than regular pressure plates, which is what you have now

Thanks Ron.....man u r Johnny on the Spot!! 😁

Is that self adjusting pressure plate something that comes with the clutch kit if I order it that way or is it some other after market item?

Do u have a suggestion about what brand clutch kit to use and where to buy it?

Thanks!

I like LUK brand for Clutch stuff, I think Ford used LUK brand in their new cars and trucks for many years, when there WERE MANUAL transmissions, lol, getting pretty scarce now-a-days

Yes you can get self adjusting pressure plate(SAC) with a "kit"
Or regular pressure plates in a "kit"

Self adjusting will have 3 or 4 small springs around the center "forks" on the pressure plate

Regular seen here: https://ic.carid.com/wp/sachs/w01332624213sac_1.jpg
SAC seen here: http://cdn.nexternal.com/uuc/images/CLUTCH_LUK_SAC.jpg

The pressure plate that holds the clutch disc against the flywheel is what is adjusted by the small springs
When a clutch disc is new it is THICK so small springs are fully compressed
Over time as the clutch disc wears down, the springs push the plate in bit by bit so distance to engage and disengage the clutch remains the same, so the clutch pedal engages and disengages at the same place over the life of the clutch disc

With a regular clutch pressure plate when disc is new it will barely disengage with clutch pedal to the floor, some times you have to shut off the engine to put trans in 1st and then start engine, lol, for a few weeks until disc wears down a bit
And then pedal will engage and disengage higher and higher in pedal travel as disc wears down, until its close to the top and will start to slip
