Automatic acts up
Hey, I have a 2005 xlt 4x4, has the 4.0L with auto. My issue is when I put the lever into drive or reverse the truck revs high. Sometimes it will go into gear sometimes not, and a few times the gear shift wouldn't let me take it out of park. Anyone have this issue before? There is 170kms on it, I was driving it up untill I started having major issues with the rear end overheating cause of the air flow being plugged but my issue with the shifting started at the same time that went on me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Maintenance starved vehicle?
Are you the original owner? Do you perform any work on vehicles yourself?
What's with the polling option? You didn't ask a question.
1) Have you checked the ATF level and condition? I'll assume you have no maintenance or repair history with this truck.
At your mileage, two transmission pan drops and filter changes should've been done.
I'd bet your ATF is "blacker than the inside of a cow".
Many are pleasantly surprised with their transmissions' improvement in performance after fluid refreshment.
Mercon V is the fluid to use. A pan drop with refill requires 5 qt./l of fluid. Valvoline sells a 6-pack of Mercon V which is real economical online.
2) Curtailed airflow over the rear end causing failure is a new one. Details, please. .
Could the rear differential have simply been run dry? Pervious owners traversing water can displace the gear oil. It's good to check diff oil levels.
3) The linkage between the shift lever and exterior of the vehicle needs occasional lubrication. I must do this to my 2005 as shifting it is indeed stiff.
Also inspect the gear range selection linkage aside the transmission. You could have loose or bent parts causing binding.
