8.8 is good, open is bad i guess since you could have limited slip which is better, and depending if you tow or not 3.73 can be both good or bad.... nothing is really good or bad in this case

the 7.5 is a weaker axle than a 8.8....if you get the chance, i would upgrade!

no...l/s was an option on all Rangers, FX4 Level II it was standard....

the only other Ranger that could have a 31 spline L/S stock axle is the '02 FX4's....since they are equal to the FX4 Level II's...

Well I'm curious as to who's right here. My axle code is R7 and I have a 2004 Ranger FX4(not Level 2) - according to the write-up on axle codes on the Ranger Station, I have a 31 spline axle. According to my axle code, I have an limited-slip 8.8" with 4.10 gears, but now I'm wondering if it's really a 31-spline as I'd thought. I don't know if it's allowed to include a link but here's a quote from over there...

"Most Rangers are equipped with the Ford 7.5-inch rear axle with several exceptions:

1) 1986-up "Incomplete vehicles" also known as "Chassis Cabs" were frequently equipped with 8.8" 28-spline axles, the '86-88 examples are distinctive as they are the only 8.8" Ranger rears that have no provisions for a RABS sensor.

2) 1990 & up 4.0-liter Rangers. These are ALWAYS equipped with the 8.8-inch 28-spline rear axle.

3) 1998-up 4x4 supercab Rangers regardless of powerplant are frequently equipped with 8.8" axles

4) FX4 Rangers 99-current come equipped with an 8.8 rear and 31-spline axles with either 4.10 or 4.56 axle ratios."

I'm not saying you're wrong Maurice, but I wonder who's correct here. Neither of these write-ups include any references to where the information was obtained.

if you don't have a Level II, then you don't have a 31 spline axle nor does it have the Torsen limited slip.......you have a 28 spline 8.8 with a Ford clutch type limited slip.......

ONLY the '02 FX4's are the only non Level II FX4's that had the 31 spline 8.8........TRS's info is wrong.......no Ranger came from the factory with the 4.56 gears......also, the 7.5 axle is still used in extended cab 4x4's.....espically the ones that have the 3.0 engine......

I got all my info from Ford.....

Mine says 97.... I have an Open 8.8 with 4.10 gears...... WTF?????

I have a 3.0 V6 4x4!!! I imagine this is an option on my truck and a good thing??

Im gonna climb under my truck and look at the diff and make sure im not dreaming. Wow i for sure thought i would have a 7.5 with a *sh1tty* gear ratio. Wow im shocked!

EDIT: yup I checked the diff tag and it says 4.10 8.8 on it just like the picture on the front of this thread. Im soooo happy that i dont have to get a new diff, makes my life sooo much easier :)

the 8.8 was put in at random in the 3.0's.....more 3.0's have the 7.5 than the 8.8...

diff axle help

I am new here but recently decided to build my Ranger up. I pulled the drums off and noticed that the axle seals were leaking and off to the auto parts store I went. Well I thought I had the large rear end in my truck so I got the axle seals for the 8.8 and got home only to discover they were too big. So I got the smaller ones and finished the install and rebuilt the brakes with the 10 in ID drums and so on. Well I figured I would go ahead and get a chrome diff cover beings how it is seen so well on my lifted truck. I dont know which diff cover to get so here is my tag.
S329A
3L73 88 9L27

Does this mean I have a 373 geared 8.8 ?? If so how come the smaller axle seals were need?? Thanks in advance. I really need this info so I can get the proper chrome diff cover. I am gonna rebuild the front again and I know it has the Dana front end but cant remember which one.Does the rear end info I have provided determine what front is in my truck?
