Brake Upgrades and new axle
Brake Upgrades and new axle
Ok, I'm looking at getting an 8.8 from an explorer (or... another ranger) with disc brakes and l/s. I need new rear brake junk anyway, so i'd like to get upgraded to 4 wheel discs. At the same time, I figure I'll get new pads all around.
SO...
Right now the axle I'm looking at, another member is selling on here, says needs new rotors and brakes (I'm assuming this means pads, and not calipers)
only thing I don't like is that it's got 3.73s, how different would that be than my 4.10s? can I swap the 4.10 gears to the new axle? (not sure, are the expo axles 31 or 28 spline?
And if I'm getting new rotors, what would you guys recommend, is it worth it to pay more? are summit brand rotors worth my time? any upgrades I can make while the axle is out? and pads, too? what do you recommend? would the front/rear use the same pads?
what kind of rebuild should I do before it goes in? It'll get a fresh coat of paint to look nice, but what should I do internally?
thanks guys...

Gear swaps are easy and depending on the mileage on the axle itself i would suggest a master rebuilt kit have all the bearings pressed in all nice. Gear swaps can get pricey if you have someone do it. I mean if you don't wanna re-gear the rear run 3.73 up front. The expo's are 31 spline also. For prepping it i would have the entire thing sand blasted before your mount the spring perches. This way when its all done you can prime it up real good and giver a nice coat of gloss black or what ever you want.
For the brakes i would just run stock replacements you are running stock tires and wheels (not sure). I would just run a premium pad and rotor, wouldn't hurt to bleed the system and run some fresh fluid. All depends on you budget.
This is just my opinion

so I have to have the front and rear geared the same I guess.
where could I get a master rebuild kit and what all would it include?
my 4.10 gears aren't dependent on it being 28 or 31 spline right? since I'd still be using the l/s carrier from the expo axle.
I'm looking at doing it with myself, with some help hopefully (you know who you are if you're reading this haha). so it shouldn't be too bad.
oh and I have to mount sprng perches... so it's not a straight swap then? well thats doable I guess.
what about how I see a set of pads for $20 and a set for $120, are they that much better? or maybe just hit a nice middle of the road price range...

If you are doing it yourself do you have access to a press to have the bearings pressed? I'm sure you can get away with just a ring and pinion swap and be fine.
With the expo axle the expo runs the leafs under the axle and the ranger runs them on top Spring over Axle. You can run it under if you want the truck lowered. But your not doing that so you just cut the perches off and have them welded to the top of the axle tube.
What you pay for is what you get with pads. Personally I run Wagner Thermo Quiets they are a high quality ceramic pad. But you dont have to do this you could go with a middle of the road pad and not spend crazy money. Say its like "Good, Better, Best" get the Better ones

Yeah definitely gonna need some help with the install then haha.
So, like this kit here would do me, right?

not sure on the press, possibly. Looks like this will cost more than expected haha but what doesn't... should be worth it though.

I'd end up spending more converting to discs wouldnt I? have to get some caliper brackets, calipers, would it not end up costing about the same?

I would just run the ring and pinion and call it a day and flip the perches
That's not the main reason I want it though, it's just an added bonus. What's the advantage in doing all that piecing together over getting a stronger axle with the features I want and swapping in my gears?
That kit is for the Trac Lok I was talking like this

Theres a master kit for the 31 spline 8.8 rebuild at advance. If you cant find any expo with 4.10's and a l/s I know theres some around me.
Do you plan on wheeling it or running a big tire? 28's are plenty strong enough. Loaded calipers new are around $50ea. When I pulled everything for a mustang swap with an l/s it cost me $100. Then I got new calipers and rebuilt the l/s. I prolly have about $200 with all new fluids and lines.

what about the brake setup from the 10-11 rangers? would that be an easier swap?
If I did do it that way, (keeping my axle) I wouldn't get into the axle, as a l/s or trac lok isn't a priority, I NEED new rear brakes anyway so that's why I was looking to upgrade. It's about time for the new boating season which means I for sure need good brakes in the rear.
having l/s on the boat ramp would always be nice but I've got 4 dub in case I REALLY get in a pinch.

Damn. You mean that's pricing it out for the ranger stuff?
What about new mustang parts? I guess it would be calipers, rotors, caliper brackets that I need to modify, anti moan brackets... Is that it? Lines I guess... Would it be new new mustang parts or do I need to get like the 94-04 mustang parts?

Yeah... That was me also haha.

Kinda pricy. 269 without calipers, and the calipers with parking brake are 300 a pair.
May be another it somewhere out there.

bump.
buying these later today

and then hopefully these

thats pretty much all I need right? calipers, brackets, rotors, anti moan? and pads as well... oh and the calipers are already blue to match my truck! they have soft lines still attached.
These parts should all work together and work on my truck, right? and parking brake I can make work too?
