C-5 Transmission Problem

I bought my beater for 300 bucks and it had trans problems from the start. I drove it home in 2nd gear (about 15 miles and over the Delaware Memorial Bridge) I had an Ebay Rebuilt Trans on its way and it was changed by me and my ASE Cert. Mechanic Buddy.

There has been a long list of problems but the one I can't figure out is the fact that it will run fine for about 10 miles and then it slips in 3rd real bad and won't go into reverse at all. I have an aftermarket trans cooler in it because the radiator trans cooler is clogged and was one of the earlier problems.

If you have any ideas let me know. If you have had this problem let me know.

I want to get this fixed so I can go to Wharton and go wheelin with the rest of you guys.

third and reverse are the same high clutch applying (just without the forward clutch engaging) it is the one just behind the front pump... it sounds like a sealing ring problem on the pump support, (read:internal problem), not super major but trans r/r and teardown time... first make sure the linkage is perfectly adjusted (they are sensative to this) then you could even pull the valvebody and air test the clutch pack to verify first...lol

The linkage is good we (me and an ASE Cert. Mech) already adjusted that. Asfor the other problems would it only do that stuff when the trans warms up.

it could still be the same problem that canaan said, as the trans heats up, the fluid thins in viscocity, and the seal may not have problems unless the fluid gets thinner. since its only the last 2 gears you are having trouble with, and not all of them, im leaning towards what he suggested earlier, and if you bought the trans from a business on ebay, you should look into the warranty for it

u said the internal cooler in the radiator is clogged and u have an aftermarket cooler installed...are u completly bypassing the internal one? if so that may be an issue as the one in the radiator is the main heat sink for the trans fluid.

it depends what kind of cooler he has, i have just a stacked plate cooler (about 160 sq inches) on the torino and it runs just fine, if you have a tube and fin, then you cant really use that as a primary cooler. what kind of cooler do you have and how large is it?

It is a tube and fin aftermarket cooler about 6 x 12. When I replace the Radiator I am going to run the trans lines back through that. but that won't be until later this month.

the old trans was burnt and i figured out it was because the plugged up coil. The fluid is still a nice pretty red like is supposed to be. Mainly becuase I don't drive it very much it may have 300 miles on the rebuilt trans.

mike i wouldnt drive it much more without a better cooler. you wont have to use the one in the rad if you use a GOOD stacked plate cooler, at least 150 sq inches

Alright Thanks for all the help guys I don't drive the truck that much anyway but I will lay off using it until I get a better cooler I will let you know how it does when I get it.

Should I tee the line into the radiator and leave the aftermarket cooler in there also.

if you do get the rad fixed, run it into the rad, out of the rad and into the cooler, out of the cooler and into the trans. if you dont get the rad fixed, DONT run it through the rad, use just the cooler by itself, assuming its sufficient

the trans cooler line on c4/c5 feeds the rear lube passages on the rear mainshaft so thats definately what smoked the last one, the pump output from convertor is where it outputs from the trans... i would pull the valvebody and air test the clutches for leaks, if they are sound than install performance automatics full manual valvebody, available from summit racing among others.... you will love it i promise and you trans. will love it also... lol

The bypass isnot what killed the last trans. It may be what is killing this trans but the plugged radiator is what killed the last trans (I'm Guessing) The old trans was shot when I bought the truck. Well I will look into the problems you guys have helped me with and I'll go from there.

Thanks for all the help.
