Can't get diff cover off...

Long story short...a dealer did the last oil change on my truck's differential and they used way too much RTV gasket maker. Is there anything that will eat through this stuff? I have tried everything I can to get the differential cover off without damaging it, but it won't budge.

A razor or utility knife should work. I'd also give something like a putty knife a shot. A screw driver ought to be able to pry it off too.

sometimes when they are stubborn i get a screwdriver in a good spot and give it a few wacks with a hammer... then things just kind of pry off, but be carefull no matter how you remove it if it is the fibergass cover, i know someone who it actually started cracking apart on him becuase he had to pry it so hard. the metal covers dont have this issue.

yea, the majority of the 8.8s and some of the 7.5s came with fiberglass composite diff covers from ford.

since steel is so high it also saves in a price class.
