Clutch smoking

1994 ranger 4.0 5speed. I got stuck with a loaded trailer trying to get in the back yard. Clutch started smoking and was rough getting into gear. After I got it in the yard and unloaded the clutch will not engage letting me put it in gear. If the truck is off I can shift between all gears. Start it up will not go in gear if I leave it in gear while I start it it takes off moving. So I gravity bled it for a hour then did it like bleeding brakes. I have a great pedal but no engagement. Any ideas before I start tear down?

You may have boiled the clutch fluid which could cause some slave damage, the slave deforms a bit when it gets that hot so doesn't have full travel out, so its not disengaging the clutch disc fully
You could have air in the master if fluid did boil, bubbles go UP from slave to master, you could try pulling out masters c-clip on the piston, letting any air out, then putting it back in
Long shot

Takes quite a bit of heat to get friction material to smoke, think of getting brakes hot enough to smoke.................yes thats VERY VERY HOT

So yes, pull the trans and have flywheel surfaced if possible or replace it, it will be "blue" from getting hot
Use self adjusting pressure plate and new clutch disc and slave

Just for future reference if you feel the clutch slipping(getting hot) push in clutch pedal and wait a few minutes with engine running, for it to cool off, or if time is not an issue shut down and wait an hour or two

Thanks I was afraid I torched it just hoping I was wrong. I should have known better but when you are pressed for time your common sense goes out the window.
