Diff cover bolt size...?

Anybody know what size the bolts for the diff cover are? Thanks.

(not the head, the actual bolt)

I have a couple of hundred here but I threw the package away. I am pretty sure it is 3/8-24.

No need to drive around with out one.. I'v got 10 of them in the back yard.. attached to another axle that is

Thats what I went to pick up, longer ones for the new cover. I got a set of 1 1/2" Grade 8's and lock washers... I think they may be like 1/32nd to long though.. have to check tomorrow.

EDIT:: PS they are 5/16 - 18 (course) length stock is 3/4".

If they are too long can't you just put an extra thick gasket on there to compensate for the longer bolts?

There is no gasket for the diff cover, you just use RTV. (well I have seen a few out there, but RTV is what is recomended) I could throw a second washer on it though...

Well yeah that's what I meant... a thicker layer of RTV. It's only 1/32"... an extra washer would work too though lol.

Eh..

Yes they are 5/16 - 18 (course)

I have 1 1/2" long bolts for mine, and they are darn near perfect.

I check a 1" on it for ya and it fits through the cover, but I'm not convinced there would be enough threads for my comfort.

i thought you mentioned earlier that the 1.5" long bolts were just a hair too long.?

how many washers are you using?

ive got a selection of 5/16 -18 bolts. 1", 1.25", and 1.5"

i guess i figured they were metric.

Since then I have tried them. With one lock washer they are just right.

Maybe try the 1 1/4" just for ****s and giggles.. that would probably work well.

i got it done. i used only 1" long bolts as i had to stack washers or shorten the 1.5" long bolts. inorder to get them to work. but i think it is plenty of thread for it.

might get me some stainless steel cap head screws.

thanks jason.

ya i tested the 1-1/2 long bolts and they stopped and i had atleast 3/4" left of bolt sticking out.

was this on your 31 spline? mine is only 28, would that matter?

Looks great, Zach. I used 1 1/4" SS bolts and SS washers and they worked fine. It's a 31-spline but I would think the housing face is the same as a 28.
