front axel stubs

I have a 2002 4.0l 4x4 manual trans manual transfer case ranger. I sometimes find myself out in the middle of nowhere and like to have certain spare parts to help me get back out if necessary. It would be nice to have some axel stubs in case a cv joint breaks or something goes out in the front differential. Is there a commercially available axel stub or has someone made one? I was thinking of cutting some old axles down so that just the cv joint cup ant the splined end that goes into the bearing/hub assembly remains. Any reason why this wouldn't work in an emergency situation?

It should work fine. I've read on various Ranger forums of people taking old spare axles apart to use as you want to.. You could possibly contact an online CV axle builder and ask them about obtaining the stub shafts, but getting some junkyard CV axles would be the most cost effective route here..
