Hey guys. Well, like I said in my other post, I was working on the truck yesterday, and I think I did something really stupid. I turned the front drive shaft A LOT while it was still on the ground. Now when it is in drive, and I release the brake, it won't move unless I really press on the gas. It's all bound up. I'm wondering how I can remedy this. Would driving around backwards help, or am I gonna have to get under it and keep spinning the drive shaft the opposite way? Could this even be my problem?

BTW, everything on the front end was just rebuilt or replaced in December other then the front axle itself.

 

Ha, well, I fixed it, but it wasn't the front end. It was the rear.

I decided that the best thing to do would be to actually roll down my windows, turn down the music, and listen. I kept hearing a creaking noise in the rear, and remembered that yesterday was the first time in about a year I used the parking brake. So that got me thinking that maybe it got gummed up. So I drove about a mile, and then while going about 45, slowly applied the parking brake until I was at about 35, then release, and it quit doing it.

Whoever said that actually doing something teaches you something is one smart, smart man. I think I will start doing the work on my truck from now on :)

 

lol you left your parking brake on... my cousin did that with her probe and it caught on fire.

Once, when I was at the Cadillac dealership, we had a brand new Fleetwood, and the parking brake was set on tight even in the released position. This car was fresh off the tansport.

Several mechanics drove it around the block to check out a clunking sound and the rear brakes were red hot, smoking. I can see how a fire could easily start from this malfunction. I mean this thing was glowing cherry red, and yanno that gas tank is literally inches away.

Always check the parking brake and always prep/inspect a new car!

 

Well, the parking brake is still gummed up. I don't freaking get it!

Is there a way to just disconnect the damn thing? I don't use it anyway, and I'd like to be able to actually drive the truck!

 

Take the rear brake drums off -- only maybe you can't because the parking brake is on!

You can disconnect the cable if you do that.

Usually it's one of the two cables that go to the rear axle itself, not the main single cable going to the cab. Just aft of the drivers door underneath is where the three cables are joined. From there you should be able to figure out which cable/cables are your problems.
