i have a 94 4.0 5 spd with 3.27 gears and i run right around 1900 rpms on the highway and im running stock 235 tires i want to run 32s how can i gear it so its close to the same ratio and keep my gas mileage witch is only 16 but i drive around town most of the week but my weekends are on the highway. any ideas

well a 235 tire is roughly a 26" tire.......use this formula:
new tire size / old tire size x stock gear ratio = new gear ratio
32/26 x 3.27 = 4.02....i would go with a 4.10 rear gear...


example (my truck before the 35's)
35/31 x 3.73 = 4.21.....and since they don't make a 4.21 gear, I went with a 4.56 gear ratio...

235/75/15 is a 28.9 inch tire

 

so i could go with around 3.55s or 3.73

 

Well 32/29 x 3.27 = 3.60 so I think you would be fine with either, i'll let someone with a little more knowledge make that call.

 

or just keep stock gears and not worrie about it sounds alot cheaper

 

I didn't regear with my 32s and I'm fine. But then again I have 4.10s stock

 

Just keep this in mind, the steeper the gear, the less you are able to move your truck but will get better milage, and vise versa... a 3.73 will be quicker off the line but you loose your fuel economy relativly speaking compared to the 4.10's. Now if you were going from 3.27's to 5.13's, you'll not only barely get the thing to move, but burn up gas trying to get it to move.

I'd go with the 3.73's to be honest.

 

^^not true......i am getting better milage with the 4.56's and 35's than i was with 3.73's and 31's..

 

3.73s are faster off the line than 4.10s?

its the other way around, the lower the gear the faster you'll get off the LINE but you will have a lower top speed...

I got better mileage with my 4.10s and 35s than I did with the 4.10s and 31s. My 4.88s and 35s are a different story though.

 

meee too....but when i was all stock, i was getting 15mpg no matter where i drove.....now i am getting 15 in the city and 18 on the highway.......might be the tuner and other small engine mods, i dunno...

 

4.10's with 32's If your going with I've got 4.10's with 31's and its fine. But with a 4.0L you could go with 3.73's. Your always going to want to go bigger so i'd get 4.10's now.

 

yeah but i dont plan on going much bigger than a 32" tire for a long time i just want to do a mild lift like 2 inches all around and maybe a body lift and with that i could fit 35s but i dont want to kill my gas milage that bad so my ? is 3.73 or 3.55 gears? i dont off road all the time i still need a truck that gets around 16 miles to the gallon and what can i do other than intake and exhaust for better gas mileage. thanks guys u have been a great help

 

if youre thinking 35s then go with at least a 4.56, on the GFs '03 with the 4.0L when we go up to the 35s I'm going with a 4.88 so she can get better than 14-16 MPG.

yea i didnt get the best gas mileage, but it most likely had to do with the way i was driving.. it was a quick little truck that liked smokin tires haha
