Got Me An 8.8 Have Some Questions
Ok so I found an 8.8 at the jy yesterday off a 2001 ranger. so i pulled it now what I wanted to know is what gears I should put in it, and do i just need the ring and pinon set, or a whole install kit? Also curious about the front diff I know I need to regear that at the same time what gears would i get for that? My ranger is a 99 4wd 3.0 with 33's and im dying right now my whole drivetrain is taking a toll. Thanks in advance

4.56 gears.
Get the whole install kit. The whole shebang will cost less normally if you can remove the front diff on your own and drop it off at the installer.
OR, buy a used front, and drop that and the new 8.8 off at the installer for gears.
Then come home and swap it out all in an afternoon.

M35/Dana 35/D35.....thats your front axle. I suggest getting gears from CompleteOffRoad.com. Cheap Yukon gears....got my front gears, rear gears w/ install kit, notched centerpin, and a couple completeoffroad decals for right about $400 shipped.
You're not a PITA, I think I asked the same exact questions at one point.

Maybe he can't weld on shock tabs as super badass as you can. Out of all people you should be the last one trying to criticize what other people do, if thats what you are attempting to do.

^Ditto^ Plus the added width isn't necessarily good for a slammed ride. I was gonna do the expo, and I even bought one, but then I found a wrecked '05 L2....so, I went and bought that and am currently running it,

Christian....for once, I'm right there with ya, even if I am a hypracrite who has a 31spline axle that's soon getting expos discs. lol.
Excuse me...but WHY THE HELL was I quoted, followed by what you said?? Care to answer me?
I'm sorry if 95+ Explorer w/ LS rear end isn't was everybody wants or needs and certainly isn't the end all to rear end swaps. Shoot....You certainly DON'T need 31spline rear axle, same goes with 90% of those who put one in.

I found plenty of the Expo rear ends at the junkyard when I was looking for the gears I wanted. I dont have the time or the skill to weld so why get one? I also dont feel like asking my grandpa to do it for me either. I wanted something that I could easily put in the truck by myself in a weekend.
Ryan, I was wondering for my own personal knowledge how much is it gonna cost to get those gears in?

Sooo....Free .99? SWEET!
Also....If it were me, I wouldve just ground the ring gear down to run the factory centerpin. Some advice against the notched pin. But I have no real experience as to which is better/worse. 4.56 wouldn't take much grinding at all....I ground my 4.88's and it really wasn't that much grinding.
I know I'm not Ryan, but i'll put my info in for the hell of it...
My axle guy works out of his shop behind his house. Charges $150 per axle for labor if the the axles are already pulled from the vehicle, and only uses Yukon gears.

Budget $700 in the rear swap. I've gotten quotes ranging from $1200 for both axles with gears and install, to the deal I got, to $500 labor for JUST the rear axle, to they require drive-in, drive-out aka no dropping off just the axle.

I've got 35's too... LOOOOOOOOVE THEM!! I can put it in low, release the clutch, and in idle, I can drive up a steep street.
I think around town, 4.88 and 33's would be a blast. On the highway, You'll be turning about 3500rpms at 75 in overdrive. I'd say 4.56 is an econo gear for 35's...and a perfect gear for 33's. Wasn't a bad choice IMO.
