Hard-shifting trans - Bang! Boom! Bang!

Man - if I don't get this fixed soon...My '99 3.0 4X4 Auto Ranger is going to tear itself apart! It shifts up AND down like getting hit by a truck! Pull out in the morning - Bang! it hits second. Slow down at the corner, Bang - it drops back to first. Going down the road, it bangs into each gear and bangs nack down when you come to a stop...absolutely no slip into the next gear.
Got any ideas?

Thanks for your suggestions - I'll try those things this weekend.
I've been told before to seek professional help but usually by people that know me!
