does anyone know if there is a write up on how to change them? i have a 2000 ford ranger 4.0 5 speed 4x4... and what type of fluid each takes? thanks

 

i need to flush my tranny aswell.. isnt it reccomended every 6000 miles?

 

I thought the diffs took 75w-90?

 

Front - pull plug on drivers side, suck out fluid, add 80-90 (I think, could be wrong on that) until it runs out hole

manual trans - make sure you can remove fill plug first (top nut), pull drain plug, refill to top fill hole with ATF (forget which one, but it's in the manual) All fill/drain plugs are on drivers side of trans, can't miss them.

 

front diff. REMOVE FRONT DIFF and pop cover, inspect for damage, reinstall and fill with 80w90 (no fric mod)

trans, remove both 15/16 fill and drain plugs, refill with mercon V

 

i don't think mine has been done since 2000 why i want to do it now... both drain/ fill plugs on drivers side of trans? approx fill amount? so i know how much auto trans fluid to buy.. any preference for fluid? coming off hondas i know alot of guys swear by the honda fluid- shifts better

 

I changed mine at 60k for the first time(manual trans) and it was filthy. Honestly, do your tcase too....both take ATF.

Front diff....'proper' way to do it is dropping the diff and resealing the cover. But....you can do it by unplugging the fill plug, hand pumping the old gunk out, and pumping in the good gunk. Won't get it all out, but you'll get a good majority of it.

Fill all 3 up til they dribble out the fill hole.

 

am off the next 2 days, this is definitely on my to do list

 

changed the trans fluid... easier than i thought it would be..even easier than changing the engine oil. definitely needed changing! very dirty and filings on magnet.. once i figure out how to do the transfer case and front diff- they are next... the rear diff oil has been changed at least 3 times in the time i have had this truck

 

To get to the Tcase drain, you may or may not have a big black round looking thing on the driverside(lowest point on the tcase). You'll need to remove that using a 13mm socket on the 4 bolts, then you'll see the drain that takes a 3/8" ratchet to loosen. Move up and to the passenger side you'll see the fill....same story on the 3/8" ratchet. Be prepared to see dark brown. lol.

got the transfer case done, mine has the damper ( found a write up here how to do it) it was black as well! only thing left is the front diff...judging by what i seen from the others i definitely want to remove the cover to make sure i got it all out..problem is it doesn't look easy to do- the cover practically is rubbing on the front crossmember. am wondering if in this instance better sending it into the dealership or still easily done in the driveway?
