Help: Converter to flex plate nut removal technique

Thought I'd have my automatic out by now but I don't.

I found in another post on here that the nuts that go on the studs from the torque converter are 13 mm -- it was a post by D. about this 4.0 though.

Are the 3.0's the same? What kind of socket did you use? I can't get anything to go over those stinking nuts. Not a 1/2", not a 13mm. Feels like they're too big or they're not going on all the way.

The hole for the starter is so small I can't really get in there. Someone said something about an access plate but I can't find it.

For reference: 2002 3.0 Automatic with a Dana 44 that is somewhat in the way, lol.

Update: it's a 14 mm nut on mine. I can get a 3/8" drive socket on it if I don't put the extension on first. It's hard to get the socket under the edge of the thin steel cover plate that covers the whole bottom of the bell housing.

Okay maybe I'll get it now: but I'd still appreciate any advice from those who removed 3.0 automatics, thanks.

Update 2: I found the access plate. I've only stared at it like 200,000 times now. It's on the passenger side and is held on with two 8mm or 5/16" bolts. That's where you remove the nuts. Even getting the socket on, I still couldn't get the nut off and socket and nut out of the starter hole again, lol.

Alright, I think I'm fine now.

Yes, in my mud tires. The BFG's came mounted and balanced on the used rims when I bought them.

In the muds, they worked great. If I recall, it was 8 oz per tire. There's a chart on the site that tells you how much for what size tire.

They're great if you mount your own tires to save money, as I did. I have one of the Harbor Freight manual tire changers. Zach, you have one don't you?

It's one thing to mount a tire, but you still have to pay to get them balanced and this gets around that. Plus, I lost wheel weights easily offroading.

Yes, I daily drove them for about 8 months or so I think it was. No complaints. Tires all wore evenly.

How much is that changer John? I might have to run to Harbor Freight this week to get one for the BII's new tires...

The 35's I had them in wore great.....the only problem I ever had out of them were if the truck sat for a week or so....it would vibrate for a couple minutes at very low speeds and then be fine

If I remember, it ran about $39 when I got it on deep sale. I think it's about $60 or $70 normally.

not to hi-jack but...when you use dyna beads should you try to balance the tire as close as you can (maybe get it within an ounce) and then put the dyna beads in? i was thinking about doing this to my 33's. how much should i use for 33x12.50?

They say that's a good idea because the beads only really solve radial balance problems. Lateral balance problems can still be there, but they really aren't of the magnitude or as troublesome as radial balance problems.

Go to www.innovativebalancing.com and there's a chart over there somewhere with tire size vs. recommended bead fill. I'm going to say off the top of my head about 6 to 8 ounces, but if you are going to balance them first and use beads to trim, maybe you could get away with less.

Ha ha! No motivation needed, Mark. I'm psyched! (But nervous, lol -- always am when doing something I haven't done before).
