2007 4.0L SOHC - Short shift uprgade?
Hi,
2007, Mazda, B4K, 4.0L, SOHC.
Anyone know of a performance short shift i can install? Needs to be 4x4 compatible too. Ive seen some guys use the Hurst billet but its apparently only for 88-03 model fords. Mines an 07.
Manual Shifter, Billet Plus - HurstShifters
This guys did an awesome how to for this install.
https://www.ranger-forums.com/engine...-install-8344/
I despise the way the stock stick feels (its not sloppy just not ergonomic). way too long of throws and awkward positions. If anyone knows of any manufacturers making a performance short shift i could use in my set-up please pass along a link.
Thanks for all your help guys!

Hey Vista,
You mean that same model of Hurst would work for mine? I thought the transmission would be a bit different? or is it the same, just that the newer models are just the HD version? I also thought the venting issue was resolved on later hurst shifters/the newer HD tranny?
Ive seen quite a few of your posts but im still hesitant if this will work on mine. Do you have any link or pointers on how i should vent after. Im good at the basics and following directions but on the more complex issues like the venting i need to be pointed the right way first.
Thanks again,

Basically from 93+ (possibly maybe even the 88-92) all had the m5od-r1 transmissions. 01+ had the m50d-r1hd which is pretty much the same as the previous with a few internal upgrades and 1 bell housing bolt relocated. The shifter will work with no problems.
The venting issue very well might have been fixed but I doubt it. It seems like everybody has a problem eventually.
The venting in a stock application was vented through the stock shift arm. you replace the stock assemble with a Hurst and it will seal off the trans. It will find the first place it can to relieve pressure. Mine was leak was at the base of the assembly. Take a look around here and search for "Hurst vent". There have been many options. I personally drilled and tapped a hose barb into the top plate of the trans and have a hose running up into the engine bay.

Beauty, now that answer instilled some confidence.
I knew about the M5R1 tranny upgrade to the HD version in the early 00's but i wasnt sure how similar they were. thanks for the short explanation.
Ill have a look around for some different venting methods. I think you might of done a topic on the tap with a hose barb as im pretty sure i read that the other day. Where abouts in the engine bay do you terminate the hose? firewall area? did you run under the carpet? either way ill check some more threads. thanks for clarifying a few things and pointing me in the right direction.

Vista, thanks for all your help with this.
For anyone reading this thread looking to upgrade to a Hurst short shifter please note:
May, 2014 Hurst started manufacturing breather slots into these shifter to alleviate this problem. I have just got off the phone with a hurst rep who had to get in contact with engineering to confirm they did fix this.
Going forward if you purchase any new Hurst Short shift Manual Shifter, Billet Plus - HurstShifters there will be no need to mess around with a breather/pressure release as they have fixed this at factory.
Woot woot, placing my order tonight.

yeah i asked him if it was part of the bell that inserts into the tranny like OEM, if it was a gasket, or what but he couldnt confidently answer me. just that they had made a fix for it. The pic of the shifter on their website is different than what i see around the forums too. its now a chrome/steel housing instead of the gold. Im going to try and remember to upload the pics once i get mine.
