Is the axle down to the bare knuckle? Is the cover off?

Both mine just slid right out. Where does it seem stuck? At the U-joint? Or more towards the diff?

it seems like the splines are stuck in the spider gear. i even hooked one side of the axle to a tree and the axle shaft to my dads f250 and gave her a couple good yanks. i know not the best idea but im running out of options. i heated the spider with a torch and still nothing.

Have you tried wiggling the spider gears while someone tries pulling it out? Maybe the bearing is broke or something and it's sitting crooked holding the shaft in? Just guessing at this point.

yes i have tried that.

when i took the cover off i noticed that the shaft was sitting way in the spider gear and the other side was flush to the outside of the gear. almost like it wasnt put back in all the way or it started coming out.

finally got it. i brought it over to my friends dads shop and we put it on the frame machine. almost maxed out the hydraulic ram before it let go. had to hit it with a bfh to brake it free.

Jebus... did they use too long or too big of a shaft or something and just ram the SOB into place? There is no way that should have been that tight.

You using the same carrier or you going get a locker? Just curious if there is any damage to the splines in the carrier?

im going to be using the same carrier for now. all the splines look and feel fine. i have no idea why it was so stuck. eventually i will be switching to a locker.

last night after getting the carrier out i noticed a break in the seat for the bearing race.

with the bearing race in place

other side

without race

other side without race

do you think its still ok to use? i think it might be.

Look with a magnifying glass at the end of the shaft splines. I'm betting someone had a burr on the splines somewhere and instead of filing it off and pushing the shaft in the entire way, they used a hammer and punch to install the clip and the punch slipped off and screwed up a couple three splines.

there are no clips on these axles. im thinking that the seal somehow froze itself to the shaft. all the splines look fine.

as for the pictures and my question, i had a stupid moment. that "break" is supposed to be there. its molded that way so you can pull the pinion shaft out.
