Ever since I put 31s on my truck its seems to be a little sluggish getting up to speed, and the MPG is very good either. So I figured regearing seems to be the best option. Right now I have 3.73 gears and I want to go to 4.10 gears. I also want to regear because some day I want to do a bodylift and 33s and I know 3.73 gears aren't going to cut it.

I went to a junkyard yesterday and they priced me $450 for a 4.10 rear axle is that to much? I want to try and find one for $250 is that going to be hard to find? I'm going to go to some more junkyards today to see what others are selling them at.

Questions:
1st question is would getting 4.10s give me better gas mileage and get me up to speed a little quicker?

2nd question would these gears work fine with 33s?

Any info or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

It would definitely help some, and 450$ is way overpriced..I sold my stock 4.10 axle for 125$

 

Yes, the 4.10s would help with acceleration. I have noticed a huge difference between stock and 3.73's on my 2.5L 5spd, and the 31's and 4.10's that are on it now.

I think the 4.10's might also help with MPG, granted it might change the RPM range you cruise at, making it a little higher, but it might also put the RPMs in a better, more efficient range.

And yes, $450 for a rear axle is abso-fcking-lutely ridiculous.

Yhea your rpms will go up a little bit. Not to much though. In all reality when you put the 33's on your rpms will prolly be right back to about where they were when the truck was stock.

 

Yes, it will raise your RPM's while driving. BUT that MIGHT help improve your mileage by allowing the engine to run at a more efficient RPM. I dont know what the "sweet spot" is for a 4.0 ohv..

Then again, you could just spend that money differently and ditch that 4.0....

Haha. The 5.0 swap has been going through my mind like crazy the place that priced the 4.10 axle priced me $850 for an explorer 5.0L with the roller cams( I don't know what the benefits of this is) w/ 44,000 miles, I said thanks but no thanks. I still want to regear though.

 

Meh they're ridiculous. I couldve got a 2000 Explorer 5.0 with the whole engine harness and accessories for 500

 

thats what I'm talking about. If I ever did it I would want to do the setup similar to rwenzings, engine and tranny from an explorer, f150 t-case.

 

I think 4.10's will be a waste. Why do you think owners with 4.10's move up to 4.56 and 4.88 gears? Rule of thumb is you need to go up two sizes to notice the difference.

 

I would never pay over 250 for a rear axle

 

4.10s are just easier to find since a lot of Rangers came stock with 8.8s and 4.10s so you just have to swap axles instead of taking the truck somewhere and having to get the gears swapped out by a professional. A lot of guys want to move up from the 7.5 axle to the stronger 8.8 anyway.

I think it says I have an 8.8 3.73 I would go and double check but its pouring outside.

 

most shops charge $250 for a gear install around here. you can pick up a used 4.10 for $75 all day long. still be cheaper and you dont have to do any of the work!

 

You have a 4.0. It's definitely going to be a 8.8. As far as axle prices, I've had quotes from $200 up to $500 around here. I'm in the Toledo area so I assume things are about the same in the Greater Cleveland area.

You have 4x4, so yes the front has to be re-geared also.

One bump in gear sizes is not worth the cost or hassle IMO. What are your end goals with tires and gears?

 

I just assumed you already knew that you'd have to regear the front lol. My bad, I would have said something had I thought about it..
