3.73 LSRD with 35's??

Hey, so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to technical stuff with my gears and gear ratios etc. Bottom line is right now I'm running 33's. I have the 3.73 gears with the limited slip differential that was a factory option when I placed the order for my truck (2008 Sport 4x4).

Obviously I noticed some change in my torque and power, yet if i put my foot down I can still get the thing moving pretty damn fast considering.... However.. I was thinking about upgrading to 35's... Maybe quite a way down the road after adding a BL to my superlift, shackles and prekey... or possibly when I replace my worn out MTZ's and just filling in the fenders a little more..

So im just curious if you think it would be way too much for the gears... if running tires that much larger would have a seriously negative impact on my drivetrain etc etc... Basically fill me in on anything you think is cause for concern, whether I would be ill advised to run 35's. Thanks all

you can do it but its going to dog like crazy. 4.56s would be a great gear to swap too

doesn't gear work unload the bank account pretty easily?? I mean what kind of cost are we talking? considering I don't have the knowledge, tools, or setup to do that kind of work myself.

Randy's Ring and Pinion here in WA quoted me $1800 total for front and rear 4.56's. 4 Wheel Parts quoted me $1,500. That's without any lockers.

I ran 35's on 3.73's with a 3.0 for a while... it's slow... but not as bad as most would have you think.

If you re-gear i would advise to get an 8.8 as well if you don't already have one.

I ran my setup for a while then went to an 8.8 with 4.88's, axle was $150 gears were $350 install was $250 IIRC, so... around $750 total... but I'm 2WD... so around 1,350 for a 4wd...

Otherwise, I am kind of in the same spot you are, I have 3.73's L/S. I have my SL sitting in the garage. I keep going back and fourth, to SL with 33's with my 3.73s or SL+BL with 35's and WAIT a bit longer until I can afford a gear swap. The way i WANT my truck to be is double lifted on 35's, so it might be worth it to just wait so it's the way i want it.

You can run that setup for a while.. and it won't kill your truck.. I ran 35's with 3.27's with an older OHV 4.0L with 300,000km's on it.. and my tranny suffered.. but now I'm regeared to 4.56.. honestly if you regear.. go with 4.88's you'll be plenty happy with that

I think you would be good with 4.56. How much highway driving do ya do? I wish I would have gone 4.56 (if I could even have found one) so I could run 33's

Go with 4.88s for 35s. Generally speaking for Rangers, 4.10 work well with 31s, 4.56 work well with 33s and 4.88 work well with 35s.
I ran 4.88s with 33s on my sport trac (4.0L auto) and it worked just fine, although I sometimes wished for either 4.56 gears or 35" tires to bring the rpms down slightly on the freeway.

A gear change in a 4x4 ranger in the states normally runs from $1200-1500.

Thanks for all the info guys.. a little confused on some of the content lol... for example.. what's an 8.8?? and I assume lockers would just mean that both my left and right wheel would be "locked" in with eachother.. next step up from limited slip???
and I do A LOT of highway driving.. I'm a carpenter so I go where the work goes.. and sadly right now I live an hour out from Toronto, Canada's largest city.. So 85% of my work is in that area... until i complete my dream by moving north to cottage country to build multimillion dollar cottages for the rich and famous. :) then I'll be rock crawling my way into work. But for now, loads of highway km.. truck is a year and a half old and has 67000km on it.

With the style driving you do, I would do 4.56's.
