MT Fill Bolt Stuck - fill from shifter opening?

Its always something - even something as simple as changing the MT fluid. I can not remove the upper fill bolt on my 96R not even with a 16" extension. Lower drain bolt - no problem. Question - I have a shifter rebuild kit that I plan on installing. Can I pour the fluid down through the shifter hole? Also, can someone confirm that the bolt is 24mm?

Appreciate any help.

Glenn

Yes, you can fill from shift hole, but you will need to make a "dip stick" to check level

Measure from bottom of trans, just at drain hole to filler hole, thats the level you want inside

Yes, drain and fill bolts should both be 24mm

People often use a crescent wrench and round off the heads of these
You can get a bolt extractor, looks like a socket but has teeth that dig into rounded bolt head as you turn it
And then replace the filler bolt

Well I finally got the fill bolt out tonight. I hit it with my sledge hammer a few times and tried to undo it with my HD air impact wrench - with no luck. But, I must have loosened it - when I put my 16" extension bar on it and nearly broke my back on it - it finally gave. So I filled it with 3 quarts of Mercon V.

Next is installing the shifter kit.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Glenn

Glad you got it out, it's a wonder the transmission casting didn't break.

Was there some sort of Loctite product on it, or was it just tight ?
