Need info on a 1999 3.0L 4X4 auto trans swap...
Well I bought a really nice 1999 Ranger with 3.0L auto trans with 4X4 a few months back that had the 2nd to 3rd gear flare..Did band adjustments and trans was perfect until a few days ago..Now its slipping/shutters in 1st if I push the gas too much and shutters going from 1st to 2nd if gas is pushed too much so shes done..Also doesn't go into gear right away unless I go straight down from park to first..
Local yards want $350.00 for a used one..I found one on Craigslist for $125.00 but,its out of a 2002 with 4.0L V6 ..Correct me if I'm wrong but I did some research and seems both are the same other than bell housing..Can I swap bell housing and go?
Thanks in adv...

Well no to both
1999 Ranger 3.0l had the 4R44E 4-speed
2001 and up have 5R44E 5-speed
(and 4.0l used 5R55E, not 44E in any case)
Your 1999 computer can't run a 5R
And while you can change bell housings it isn't as simple as unbolting it and bolting another one on.
The back side of the bell housing on any automatic is the front side of the Main Pump, so you basically have to do a rebuild to swap these, can be done, just might as well rebuild what you have if going that far into the trans.
For your 1999 3.0l you need a 1995 to 2000 4R44E from a 3.0l 4X4 Ranger or Mazda B-3000 4X4
2WD or 4X4 are also specific, rebuild is also needed to change one to the other

Yes, I have had to change damaged bell housings on automatics, there are some things you can do to make it simpler, but you would need to find someone locally with that experience, not something that can be explained and cover all possibilities.
Because you won't know you missed something or goofed up until trans is in place and it won't engage any gear because of low pressure, and/or ATF is pouring out the front seal
Watch this short video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-L71-udS_g
This shows you whats behind the bell housing on the 4R44E, and its the same on any automatic.
When you talk about any transmission, manual or automatic, 2WD and 4WD must be included since that is transmission specific
