For the past 5 months the 4HI and 4Lo lights have been flashing on my '96. I have finally decided to try and so something about it. From what I have read the transfer case shift motor is typically the issue. I was able to get the motor itself disconnected, but I am still connected by one brown wire. Is my only option to cut this, or can I pull it out of the rtansfer case.

 

I'm not sure about the wire, but I've seen a lot of talk over on www.explorerforum.com about a brown wire mod. Not sure exactly what it does, but it might be worth looking into.

the only way to get that out is to take the t-case apart.....i don't think you want to do that......

cut it, then when the dealership puts the old connector on the new t-case motor (since you have the brown wire, the old plug will have to be fitted on the new t-case motor) have them also include the brown wire.....

 

I think this is different then the "Brown Wire Mod".

yea....that is what i did to my mom's Explorer.....it too had the brown wire...

 

IIRC, the "brown wire mod" has something to do with the all wheel drive explorers.


Explorers have an auto locking 4wd system, the mod overrides the auto feature making the tcase stay in 4wd.

 

what you mean just hook onto the black rubber and pull it out? Can i just you plyers and pull it?

 

don't cut it, in the plug on the t-case motor is a red thing (for lack of a better word) that holds all the wires in the plug, get needle nose pliers and take it out, the pull the brown wire out of it. that's what I did.

 

Ok that is what I was wondering. I will try that next.
