pops out of first gear

So i had to bring my truck to St. louis while i was getting and engine put in my car and after about 3 weeks of driving it down here first gear would pop out when taking off the shifter also it felt like there were two spots for first gear i would put it in gear and then i could push it farther forward. It only came out a couple times. but Then this weekend when i was home it was doing it a lot more. I was idling around in first gear in fields because of deer season and if i wasnt pushing on the gas and then went to push the gas it wouldnt be in gear. It also poped out of gear when i was trying to take off like 4 times or so. Has anybody else had this problem or know what would be wrong with it?

Since you mentioned the shifter not "feeling right" that would be the first place to start. If the shift arm is bent, twisted, loose, broken, or binding in anyway it can cause the shift forks to not fully engage into first gear, which would cause your popping out of gear. Make sure their is no excessive play in the shifter, it shouldn't be overly loose. Main seem obvious but make sure the shifter isn't hitting anything in the truck, cup holder, shift boot, ect. Other causes could be broken motor or transmission mounts, possibly even loose, check and make sure that they are tight and in place. Also check the transmission to engine bolts and make sure they are tight and the bellhousing in mounted flush against the block. Besides that stuff its going to be an internal issue synchro, bearing, linkage.....

would those issues with the shifter cause it just to messed up in one gear? gears 2-5 and reverse all felt fine while shifting and driving.

Yes they can cause it to only occur in one gear.

at the top end of the trans , where the the shifter goes in there are 2 forks 1 of them is bad, you can't change the shift forks without droping the trans

Update! Well i hadnt had time or money to do anything about it yet. Today i was driving home from the girlfriends house down a gravel road and hit a couple pot holes then no more third gear. I thought it just popped out like first does but nope there is no gear at all. So it looks like its time to get it rebuilt.

It needs to be removed first to see if it needs an entire rebuild or something like a shift fork.

I was thinking about going back home next weekend and taking it off the truck. Im pretty mechanically inclined but im far from a machanic so i think i will leave the rebuilding to somebody that knows what they are doing.
