Posi Install Question

Ok, I have been looking around on the forum and have decided to install a posi or limited slip, whatever. I have a 1999 Ranger 2.5L with the 5 speed manual. What years of rearends am I looking for on the Rangers and Explorers that will fit my truck? What kind of gears and how would I tell on the donor? I plan on mostly gas milage and maybe a few times pulling my little one axle fishing boat. Thanks guys.

Oh, would I have a better chance of finding them on Explorers?

You more than likely have a 7.5 inch. Look for your Safety Standard Certification label attached to the left drivers door piller. The code appears as a number or letter/number combination in the 'Axle' column of the label

Then look through this thread to id your axle.

Axle Codes (sticky?)

Heres a couple of different links for parts and info. You can also check ebay

Ok, I have an axle code of 86 which is "Open 7.5 w/ 3.73." So, I think I might look on ebay. Is the 7.5 axle a 28 or 31 spline? 28 right.

If I go to the junkyard then and find a F6 on a Ranger which is a "LS w/ 3.73" I should be good?

Yes its a 28 spline. If you buy off ebay or used I would recommend having the clutch packs replaced. You can get a new OEM LSD setup for around 150 (less ring gear). The only thing you'll need to do is transfer your current ring gear from your open. I do recommend replacing the carrier bearings and while your at it the outer axle bearings and seals.
