V-6 3.0 manual trans. pulled out gear shift to drop trans to replace clutch, now can not get shifter back in the top of trans. Goes in but can not shift into any gear. Only have neutral. Won't go in to any other gear. Have not started engine.

 

Remove the shifter cover and line up the three slots inside in the neutral (centered) position. Then reinstall.

How will I know when there lined up?

 

Yes, you will need to carefully pry any of them that are out of line back into position. Each has 3 detented positions - forward, back and centered. They are lined up when they look lined up.

Good deal. The way to keep this from happening is to make sure that the transmission is in neutral immediately before disassembly. That way, you start out with the slots aligned and they shouldn't need to be touched again for reassembly.
