Rattle from front end

Hello all,

I've got a Ranger that I bought with the intention of keeping as a winter commuter. It is giving me a lot of hell. So far it's gotten new:

Engine
Passenger CV axle
Drivers CV axles
Speed Sensor (Rear)

I'm stumped. I have a hum coming from the front end and I'm not sure what it is anymore. The front diff fluid looks milky. The rear diff was low. I topped it off. I'm lost as to what I'm missing here. When I replaced the passenger side axle. It went right in. The drivers side kept hanging up. However it finally went in. I put the truck in 4x4 to get the wheel bearing off and left it like that until I finished. Was I wrong to do that?

The other problem im having is the transmission. It drives fine if I leave the overdrive button turned off. If I turn it back on and drive. It will not drop into overdrive and the light flashes. I scanned the truck and came back with a P0732/P0735. Im at a loss here gentlemen.

Welcome to the forum

What year Ranger and what engine?

I will assume you have a 5R44E or 5R55E automatic because of the trouble codes

P0732 - 2nd gear ratio issue
P0735 - 5th gear(OD) ratio issue

On the 5R transmissions 2nd gear is (1st gear + OD), Ford combines the 2 to get ratio between 1st and 3rd for a faux 2nd gear

OD(5th gear) seem to be the common denominator

No one can diagnose any vehicle problem just from reading a post on a forum, lol, we GUESS as to what may be the problem

The SSD/CCS solenoid, CCS(coast clutch) Valve can be worn and will prevent OD from activating in 2nd and for 5th

This is in the valve body so can be replaced without transmission removal, they also make oversized valves in case the valve body bore is worn out

Example here: https://www.sonnax.com/parts/2130-ov...utch-valve-kit

Truck info:

2000 Ford Ranger 4.0 OHV Auto. I assume 5R55E. How do I tell if the valve body is worn? I can tell you I fixed the rattle problem. It was drivers side when bearing. Got a used one from five junkyard for 30 bucks. It was damn near new. At this point after driving it more. It runs and drives good other then slow shifts between 1st and 2nd. If I turn the OD off before I start driving. It drives good. It is slow to upshift almost every time. Like if I stand on it. It takes awhile to get there.

Yes, you do have a 5R55E in a 2000 4.0l Ranger

You can hook up high pressure gauge to the transmission and with rear wheels off the ground you test pressures in each gear

Good read here on how this trans works and the pressures to expect: https://atracom.blob.core.windows.ne.../2003_5_50.pdf
