REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY SWAP

Hello,

I'm considering upgrading my rear axle assembly on my 1995 Ford Ranger ... any suggestion?

I have 3.08 ratio open 8.8" axle now. Will it be good to swap that for 3.55 ratio non locking 8.8" axle with rear caliper from compatible 1995 - 1997 explorer in that range? I'm aware that rear axle assembly from Explorer is heavier than axle from Ranger ... Ranger have 2,750 compared to Explorer that have 3,200 lbs

Is it good advice to do open axle or L/S axle as well?

I want something that will work in snow & ice and allows me to pull more weight

Let me know anyone and thank you :)

I'm pretty sure that is a good year range to swap. I believe the targeted year range for explorer axles to swap in is 95-01? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. As for the diff, 3.55 should be fine. If you can find one with a limited slip in it that would be best for getting better traction in snow

Keep in mind that you will need to weld new spring perches on top of the axle. Explorer axles will have them on the bottom. You should be able to find an explorer axle with 3.55 or 3.73 w/ L/S pretty easily.

RLong31 - Yea I aware of that work needs to be done by putting in new spring perches on top of axle ... its shouldn't be that hard to complete :)

Thank you for everyone input!! :)
