Rear end went out!!!

Had a bad day! My rear end blew up and blew a hole in the rear removable casing. I believe the torsen limited slip might have grenaded and took the pinion gears and spider gears with it. I dont know for sure. I will have 2 pull the casing and see tomorrow when i get it back to the house. Its sux tho. Any idea how much $ im looking at assuming the axle itself is alright or if its not ok and i dont fix it myself.

The early Torsens were a problem.

ouch!

yea it can get very pricey if you don't know people. I'm guessing most shops will probably charge you to replace the ring and pinion also even if they're not damaged.

Pop that cover off and show us what happend. pic ***** the carnage!!

Cost wise:

4.11:1 Yukon gears from complete off road: $229 w/ master install kit
http://completeoffroad.com/i-123352-...kage-deal.html

Limited slip unit: you have a few options....ford racing trac-loc(like what chuck replaced his torsen with), throw an open carrier from a F150/Bronco then put in a lock-right or aussie....your options here are somewhat endless...just depends on your cashflow and what you want out of the truck. No matter how you look at it..you will be paying for a Ring and Pinion install/setup as the carrier is definately being replaced.

Here's some options...

Open carrier: $99(add more for spiders and side gears and thrust washers and crosspin) http://completeoffroad.com/i-123370-...31-spline.html

If open carrier is installed:
LockRight $299 http://completeoffroad.com/i-123385-...-78-x-pin.html

Lockers..
Detroit $579 http://completeoffroad.com/i-122884-...187c-145a.html
Eaton E-Locker $739 http://completeoffroad.com/i-123128-...-eat19660.html

If you want a limited slip unit...
Trac-Loc $249 http://completeoffroad.com/i-129821-...31-spline.html
Detrout True Trac(VERY VERY similar in design to the Torsen) $449 http://completeoffroad.com/i-123637-...31-spline.html

you don't have a torsen limited slip do you? unless you swapped to an '02 L2 31spline axle, you have nothing to worry about.

I believe i might go back with another torsen or try to find a 8.8 from a junkyard.

Other than now, I have had great success with the torsen. It hooks up very well offroad and on wet pavement.

I will try to get pics up later.

I would just get an 8.8 out the junkyard, there are litterally hundreds of them around here, and you can get them for $200. the biggest problem will be finding one that matches you gear ratio.

one thing to remember here jake...you've got a 31spline 8.8 in your Fx4, where as the rest of us have puny 28spliners......meaning...your axle is signficantly stronger than the average ranger.

If you can afford the truck being down for a little bit this would be a good time to do an explorer diff swap. The only thing you are going to gain since you already have the FX4 is disc brakes. It still has 31 spline axles, and you can get it with a limited slip and different gear ratios. There will be some work involved for the spring pads and shock mounts. Just another option for ya.

I have a brand new 28 spline trac loc and ford racing master gear install kit I'll sell cheap if you end up with a 28 spline rear.

Good luck!

I would check with ford i think they did a recall on 02 FX4 model rear ends

Here is a link(http://www.ford-trucks.com/recalls/r.../y-2002/t-4302). I have been debating on taking mine in to see if they will do mine before it goes out and leaves me stranded
