I want to put some 33"s on my truck and will need some new gears, I know a 4.10 will work but would a 4.56 be better? Also is it easy enough to install yourself for someone who doesn't know much about this kind of stuff? What about this kit http://www.4wheelparts.com/4wp/produ...U&expand=sub3#

This has come up a bajillion times in the last couple weeks.

 

you would be OK with 4.10 gears in the rear turning a 33" tire
4.56 would be over kill, unless you went to 35" or taller

 

If you already have the 4.10 ,s changing the carrier isn't that bad . You [ might ] can do that , without exploding your differential . The easiest way , is to swap in an rear that already has what you want . Probably cheaper too . Do a JY search .

 

No I don't have the 4.10's, but I hear that throwing an explorer rear axle on isn't just bolt n' go though, are there rangers with the 4.10 that would just bolt on? Thanks

 

Yes , there are ranger rear ends that come with traction lock differentials . Not nearly as many as I'd like . I'm putting a traction lock in mine , [ if it ever comes ] and changing the gears because I want a gear ratio that isn't stock , [because I am stupid] . I have some experience w differentials and I'm expecting it to be a ***** . If you can follow fairly simple directions , and you want to do it yourself , and you cant find the right rear end , you could buy one with the right gears and just change the differentials . It is 1/10th the work of changing gears . You could take your time doing it too . Also worst case , you'd have your original rear end , if you didn't get it quite right, you could make adjustments .

 

of course you have to store the extra rear end somewhere...

 

Back of the truck with the rest of the spares ? LOL . True , but one assumes you have a work area if you plan to tackle a job like changing gears and installing a limited slip/ locker . I want to live too much to try to do it at the curb , parked on the street.
