Rear Output Shaft Seal Leak - V shaped gouges

My transmission was leaking from the output shaft, so I dropped the drive shaft and pulled the seal out from the Rear Output Shaft to discover two v shaped gouges: View image: IMG 20150523 130115

I have a couple of questions dealing with this discovery I am hoping can be answered:
How should try and fix them (if possible)?
Could these two Vs be causing the majority of the leak?
When I replace the seal, will these gouges cause the leak to continue?

My truck is a 2002 Ford Ranger, v6 3.0L, 2wd, with an automatic transmission.

Thanks for any help and guidance you can provide!

Don't recall see divots like those before?

I wouldn't think they would cause seal to leak, but I would get a Ford seal to replace whatever was in there before.
