Remanufactured AT, Shifting Hard from 1st to 2nd

2001 B3000, 4x4 with 3.0. Around 6 months ago the transmission went out in my truck, got it rebuilt. Within 2 months the it started having issues again and I guess the valve body was two hot. I took it back to the shop, they tried to new valve bodies and then I guess put in a re manufactured AT. The truck "jumps" or shifts really hard from 1-2 now, have put about 200 miles on it since getting it back a few days ago and not seeing it go away. Any advice on what to do? I would prefer to avoid the shop as they had my truck for 6 weeks last time I brought it in for warranty work.

Welcome to the forum

You have a 5R44E automatic in a 2001 3.0l Ranger/B3000
2nd gear in a 5R is 1st with OverDrive drum engaged, so its a "Computer gear"
If the engine RPMs seem to go high and then a hard shift it means 2nd is being skipped and transmission is shifting from 1st to 3rd(like the 4Rs did)
One of the reasons Ford added the OD on in 1st was to get a smoother shift when start out from a stop

At higher speeds does the OD(5th) seem to work OK?
What about OD on/off button(won't effect 2nd), does OD stay off and then come back when you press the button again

You could stop by an auto parts store and see if they can read OBD2 codes from your computer and see if any transmission codes have be set, WRITE THEM DOWN, exact numbers

I'm relating first hand experience, nothing more.
How many miles were on the vehicle when the rebuild was done? That was 6 months ago, yes?
Did it shift well for 2 months or "sorta OK"? I'm totally sorry to hear about your distress.
I doubt they installed a second rebuilt unit.
Is your truck in good shape?

That you want to avoid your rebuilder is not a good thing.
If nothing else, I'd try a 10 oz. bottle of LubeGard (red bottle). It is regarded as a good product and many people report improvements after use; as I do.
The product's claims include enhanced lubrication. I believe hydraulic functions were improved in my applications.
I perform "drain & fills" on my vehicles' transmissions. The improvements I feel are not imaginary.
Also, this isn't an insincere product plug....no connection with the manufacturer.

To answer RonD question, it doesn't got into high RPMs in second gear. It just is a hard jump, it is almost more exaggerated the faster im going. When just neighborhood driving it is less. There is no O/D light coming on or off, and the rest of the lights are fine. The O/D comes on and off easy. Reaching 5th on the freeway is nice too, everything seems good besides getting out of 1st.

The vehicle had 130K miles when the rebuild was done. The only reason the tranny went out if because the pan got hit when 4x4ing and I guess dented the filter, which was suffocating the transmission. I do lots of maintenance on it and try to keep it in good shape. It shifted pretty well and I use it as a daily in the winter. My wife took it 50 mins out of town and thats when it started overheating.

My rebuilder has been verbally nice to me, just the fact it took 5 weeks is not ideal. And his place is always a wait / full, me and my wife have to share our other vehicle which is not ideal. I will try the red lube stuff, sometimes on the freeway the speedometer will go to o and come back up which I read is VSS. But I have also read the VSS can cause shifting problems too?? My try red lub and switch VSS out

2001 Ranger has an OSS(output shaft speed) sensor, it is on the upper rear of transmission, driver's side

C193 in this diagram: https://www.justanswer.com/uploads/9...ranger_vss.JPG

OSS goes directly to the computer, the computer then sends out a calibrated(8,000ppm) "speed signal" to the cluster, this one signal is used for both speedometer and odometer
So next time speedo drops out see if odometer also stops, if so then signal from computer is the issue, if odo stays working then speedo in the cluster is the issue

If the OSS sensor was an issue you should get one or more of these codes
P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance
P0502 Vehicle Speed Sensor Low Input
P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor Intermittent/Erratic/High

P1500 Vehicle Speed Sensor
P1501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Out Of Self Test Range
P1502 VSS Intermittent/Invalid Self Test – APCM Functioning
