Removed torque convertor... input shaft pulled out???

Removed torque convertor... input shaft pulled out???

Input shaft walked forward a bit.....
I am installing a replacement 3.0 after the original locked up after 168k. I had to pull the convertor with flex plate when I removed the motor. I attempted to reinstall the convertor yesterday morning and realized it was not seating at all into the pump slot.A replacement convertor did exactly the same thing. Using dyechem I found both splines are engaging. After some measurments I discovered that the input shaft has moved at least an inch forward of the case,but turns and feels secured ( w/light tapping). I have heard of the input shaft walking when pulling a convertor but how is this fixed?
Measuring backwards from the bellhousing/block mounting face to the absolute deepest point in the convertor is 2" back. The measurment from bellhousing to tip of input shaft is 1.2" ,so it's bottoming out on the input by at least 0.8" and the collar never even reachs the pump gear.
