Hello Ranger Forum,

I just joined today and was hoping to get some good information about my truck. Whenever it is cold outside ( < 30 degrees F), there is moisture (rain and/or snow) and my truck has sat over night or at least for several hours ( more then 2 hours), my reverse does not work as expected. When I first put the gear in reverse, my truck will not being moving down the driveway even though I am on an uphill driveway. I usually have to give the truck some gas with the reverse gear engaged for 8 - 12 seconds depending on how frozen or stuck the reverse gear is. Eventually, the gear will release and it sounds like a pop from inside the cab of the truck. I don't know if something in the gears is literally freezing, if there is a part which needs to be lubricated, or if my truck is on the verge of a major break down. I have noticed this problem for the last 3 winters. After I hear the pop from inside the cab, my truck moves freely in reverse and any forward gear. I don't hear additional problem sounds during any part of the drive. I have a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT. Has anyone ever heard of this problem with Ford Rangers before?

 

Interesting question, mine also does this. If I let it warm up it seems to be ok. I am thinking a sticky solenoid.

mine did this once or twice. now it takes a good 1-2 seconds or so for reverse to fully engage. it was better when i had my tune and it played with the tranny settings for sure.

either way i hate this poor excuse for an automatic tranny.

 

My truck lost reverse at 108k. Ended up being a broken clutch. I have yet to rebuild it.

You can change the filter and fluid to make sure there is enough pressure. Another issue can be the low/reverse servo cover gasket failing.

This trans has issues with reverse. My only suggestion is sit in R for a few seconds before attempting to move.

I have this problem too on my 2004 Edge 4x4. Anyone ever figure anything out?

 

its most likely youre rear brakes freezing up. its a comin issue in the when they get wer and than get to freezing temps overnight. i would bet money its not your trans.

 

Yea my truck dose the same thing and its a manual trans...no matter what if its been raining or snowing and is slightly cold out it dose it. If your using your parking break thats most likely what it is

 

same with mine (manual tranny as well)

the only thing I have found that helps is to make sure everything is cleaned and adjusted properly in the rear.
