Rumbling/grinding sound when coasting
Hey folks, first post on here!
This has probably been answered before on this site so please direct me there if possible. I recently (nov 2023) bought myself an 05 ranger xlt with a 4.0L v6, sitting now at 140,000ish miles. I'm the third owner and have little info about the truck's history or past usage, but it runs great and so far has gotten me across the country and then some. Basically, it rules.
Lately I've picked up on a low rumbling/grinding sound coming from what I would guess to be the passenger front wheel area. It sounds a bit like a couple tennis ***** in a dryer, or like a plastic coffee can is dragging on the road. More rattley and hollow-sounding, not rhythmic (I had the driver side front wheel bearing replaced and it's definitely a different sound than that). It doesn't vibrate the cab.
This is the first vehicle I've owned that has enough clearance for me to lay underneath without jacking it to heaven and beyond, so I am trying to learn as much as I can about as much as I can related to my truck... I don't have any really specialized tools or anything beyond your standard maintenance kit, nor the capacity to obtain/store them.
I'm open to hearing what y'all think, if you could please also briefly describe how to check the part in question too, and/or what it does I would really appreciate that. I've got a mind for analog, mechanical systems, I just don't have the knowledge yet.
I've got the relevant Chilton Repair guide if anyone can cite helpful pages I may have missed.
Thanks y'all!!
Ben
