Shifting issues

1999 Ford Ranger 5 speed, approx 140k miles.

Over the last few weeks I've been having a harder and harder time shifting. Sometimes getting it into first/reverse takes a lot of effort, sometimes when shifting I'll grind or what seems like bouncing off a syncro.

Clutch is to the floor, I've even moved my seat painfully close so that it's nearly impossible to not push the clutch to the floor.

Fluids seem fine, though I need to get my hands on a maintenance book so I can properly identify the individual reservoirs. The two different ones that looked like they contained brake fluid were at/near their max.

I've seen a range of suggestions looking to up online anything from bleeding the master cylinder to replacing the clutch and throwout bearings, but you guys are experts on what happens with rangers typically, so where should I start?

Ah, so what I generally hear is true, and also that these are not fun to replace. :(

I'm currently in the same situation and have the manual tranny as well. Was unable to shift into gears and now can't move it at all. It's just stuck in the driveway. So now I'm looking around here trying to find information on how to do a clutch replacement and slave cylinder replacement. Anybody know where I can find the info??

I'm also in a similar situation with difficulty shifting into 1st. I also have fluid leaking on the floorboard under the clutch pedal, and it looks as if it's coming from the position sensor. Master cyl. getting bad, or could I get away cheap and just replace the sensor?

Fluid leak = replace the master.
Bench bleed the new one before you install it.

BTW (for anyone looking this up in the future): being as dropping the transmission would have been too much of a task for what I have to work with, I took it to a mechanic, turned out if was the slave cylinder.

Had him drop in a new clutch and such, being as the transmission was already dropped... sigh.

Got it replaced and the transmission has been perfect ever since.
