Should I rebuild an auto trans?
I have never rebuilt an auto trans before but I've done pretty much everything else. I Have rebuilt many engines, differentials and a few manual transmissions but never went past a shift kit or changing a front pump before. Yesterday I tore down a bad trans for kicks just to see how it goes together. Here's the thing...If I buy a seal kit I could put a trans together pretty cheap. I need a 4wd trans and I have a couple good 2wd trans to swap the rear shaft into. Whats the hardest or trickiest part of rebuilding a 4r55e?
I have never rebuilt a trans but I say go for it. If the trans is messed up now and your going to have to try and find another one what is the worse that can happen? You get it apart and can't get it back together.
when rebuildng a 5r44 and 5r55, the good thing is that there are no specialty tools needed to do it. i have been helping the trans guy at work rebuild tyler (0rangeredge2) 2wd trans into a 4x4 trans. we put an LS kit (clutches gaskets etc) bnds, shift kit, 4x4 output shaft, and a torque converter in it.
i have rebuilt 5 auto transes in my auto trans class, and the 5r44 is by far the easiest so far. id highly recommend buying the ford auto trans book, "the blue book"

I tore down another bad trans today. I guess I'll tear into a good 2wd trans and chnge the output shaft and see what I think as I reassemble it...
Just ordered the manual
