Icon4 Slow death of auto or other issue??? Help please!?

Ok let's see, I have a 1999 4x4 3.0L with approx. 215K on it. Most of the miles were on the highway. Here's the issues:

I drive it for a while, the usual park, reverse, drive some more just the usual daily thing. Well stop to get gas or go in reverse it would occasionally start to run really rough. It would idle real hard like it's just running really crappy gas the usual hard idle. Well go to put it into D and give it a little gas, I can feel it's not right. Give it a little gas it creeps but won't shift like it's suppose to into the higher gears, like I'm running it in 1 not D. I can manually take the shift column back into 1 and up to 2 and then into D to make it behave. It's fine that works. R is fine, N is fine (how could it not lol). I can shift from 1 to 2 to D. That's fine.

Ok, changed the coil pack, plugs wires are ok. MAF is fine, EGR is fine, shift solenoids seem to be in good shape. What is there left to check to eliminate?? I've heard of the torque converter could be going out. I'm not really sure about that one. Wouldn't hurt to change it out anyways. I've heard of the seperator plate. Not sure if it's that either.

So I've only got two possible suspects to check, torque converter and seperator plate. Does anyone have any other possible ideas????

I'm really desperate here. I want to make sure it's not anything else before going to have the tranny fixed. And if it is the tranny what's a rough ball park figure here on a rebuild for it???

Thanks for any and all help as I try to repair my ailing Amazon. :(

Well I talked to some people and had my mech look at it and his tranny guy. The tranny is slowly going out and it takes it longer and longer between switching between R and D to drive. So basically it's going out and straining the engine in the process.

The solution, the transmission has to be rebuilt. So that's what's going to be done. :( Thanks to everyone for their input but unfortunately I got the news I didn't want to hear.
But it will be fixed lol at the cost of a pretty penny. The Amazon will rise again. :)

Make sure whoever is rebuilding it knows their way inside of a 5R55E. I see a lot of cases where these trucks go in for transmission rebuilds, only to have to go right back in due to the actual problem not being corrected. The sucky thing about new transmissions is the electrical aspects that fail. It's not the hard parts you have to worry about, it's stuff like solenoids, wiring connections, and gaskets that are big trouble makers.
