So a few days ago i purchased new tires for my truck, Goodyear Wrangler's, the have a somewhat aggressive look to them, but still street silent. I decided to try em out, of course i live in canada and there is about a 2-to-3 feet of snow on the ground. I decided to climb a hill and go down over the other side. When i began my decent over the other side, i noticed my truck start the bog down, i stopped to think for a minute. The field below the hill looked like shallow snow, and i figured i couldnt back up halfway on the hill of snow, so i went for it. I got planted. Lucky i had a 3 ton jack, and 2 jack stands in the back of my truck.... i could go on but to the point. I got stuck about 3 times trying to get out, and i was slaming in in 1st and reverse ALOT. Now when i'm driving, i notice a sound coming from the tranny area, a whinning sound as i accelerate, but it whines to the engines rpm's. i hear it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, not 4th, but 5th i do. there seems to be no problems, other than the sound, it's not too loud, just if the radio isn't on, you can clearly hear it. Any ideas? and is it fixable?

 

i dunno about a whining noise, but ive noticed that the ranger automatics make a whirring sound, you can really hear it from outside, and it's just in the lower gears..

 

I have a 5 spd manual, and it never made this sound before, until after i got it stuck

oh, manual tranny.. yeah it shouldnt make a a whiney noise, maybe the fluid needs to be flushed?

Mine whines and it has done it for a while (30,000 miles now) all I can say is I wouldn't worry about it, I took it to my mechanic and he said its a common thing on these tranys. Oh, FYI my fluid level is fine, and I change it every year. I have noticed that it goes away when the trans is good and hot (for the most part) and in the summer I rarely hear it.

 

strange, mine never did it and had 88k miles on it with only one fluid change in that many miles.

 

ya, the sound isn't affecting anything, it still shifts the same. Just gained a new noise.

 

Prolly something like a Guide bearing or something a little bit worn. Like a slight worn gear would make a little noise too. Mine does it a little, but only noticably when cold and I mostly can't hear it over my A/C pulley noise :)

 

Any noise when idling in neutral? Could be noisy output shaft bearing if you hear it in all gears but not when idling.

 

x2 its your bearings for shure...need to take it and get the clutch assembly replaced and you should be fine. Mine did it and 1300 dollars later i leraned my lesson needless to say. Also make shure your tranny fluid is good because it could also be low fluid.

 

what redranger is referring to I believe is the pilot bearing and the throughout bearing. The bearing that I was referring to was the output shaft support bearings inside the transmission. They would be turning with the output shaft only when you are driving. The imput shaft bearings could be a possibility if there is bearing noise in neutral standing still. Hope this helps. You may want to take it to a reputable shop and go for a test drive with the owner or a technician.
