Speed sensor issue...

So, when my truck is cold, like in the morning, the speedometer either doesn't work at all, or it is very erratic and bounces up and down. Once the truck warms up, it goes to working just fine. I replaced the sensor itself (in the back of the transfer case) and that didn't help. When it acts up, I get a trouble code for speed sensor malfunction (but no CEL) and the O/D OFF light flashes. Any ideas?

For those who don't know, it is a 96 with a 1354 t-case.
