Starter issue
So I've had a few times where I have gone to start ranger and starter solonoid on inner fender clicks but starter won't turn. I've been told if solonoid clicks it's working and starter must be bad or bad wire? Anyone got any info to this
What year and what engine?
On the fender(for some years) is the Starter RELAY, often called starter solenoid, even though it isn't, lol.
The "click", if it is coming from the starter relay, means the ignition switch is sending the Relay 12volts so it is closing.
Starter motor needs 100amps to turn engine over, this is why the Battery's cables are so big, and the cable from relay to start motor is so big.
If any of these cables are corroded at the terminals then 100 amps can't flow and starter can't turn, but relay will still "click", it doesn't need 100 amps, only 1/2 amp
So first thing to do is to clean BOTH battery terminals and cable ends, wire brush them clean.
The is a DC electrical system, this means if you need 100 amps for starter motor that FULL 100 amps must flow out of positive cable thru relay, thru starter motor and back to Negative terminal on the battery.
If Negative terminal or wires can only handle 40 amps then thats all that can flow out of positive terminal, so relay only "clicks"
Check all the cable connections, Ground cable to engine, starter relay cables and starter motor cable.
If starter motor works but it is intermittent, then it is most likely a cable/wire problem.
Could be the starter motor itself but they tend to fail out right, i.e. one day they do not work, and don't start working again.
And cleaning cable ends is FREE, starter motors are not, lol.
