new vs. old

I changed the transfer case fluid today and I couldn't believe the difference between the new and the old fluid. Heres a pic of the difference. Replaced today at 40670 miles... The old fluid was still a little bit red though.

I need to do mine here soon I should of did it today but I was lazy. I just got my tranny flushed/filter change the other day. The only other thing on the maintenance left for this year is upper/lower ball joint and tie rods :(

It's really easy. I felt stupid when I couldn't find the drain plug though. A member here helped me out and once I found the plug (underneath the damper that I had to remove) it was simple.

Man I got 177k on my truck and the transfer case fluid has never been changed, I bet it looks terrible and smell bad. I can change it at any time right? I mean its mainly just gears in there as far as I know, but I dont know much about transfer cases. I just dont want it to fall apart if I change it. lol

Cody, if your truck is 2WD, you don't have a transfer case. No worries for you. I would go ahead and change the transmission fluid since you have 32K though. Every 30K is a good rule of thumb for most, 20K for vehicles that see hard use.

Garett, change your t-case fluid when you get a chance. 177K is a lot of miles to go on original fluid. The manual probably calls for Mercon in your truck, but Mercon V should be good.
