Swapping a Fm146 for a m50d

I have a 1990 Ford ranger 2.9 v6 with a bad fm146. I found a m50d out of a 1998 Ford ranger with a 4.0 will the swap work? I've been told the bell housings on the 4.0s are the same as the 2.9s but as far as gearing and drive shaft lengths and such will it work?

Drive shafts are the same between the FM146 and the M5OD-R1. My understanding is that you're looking at a direct bolt in replacement.
