I'M NEW HERE AND I NEED HELP WITH MY 2001 STOCK FORD RANGER 3.0 XLT.
I HAVE ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES ON IT. PROBLEMS STARTED WHEN O/D LIGHT STARTED BLINKING THEN I NOTICED WHEN I STOP AND DRIVE AGAIN IT SHIFTED HARD. IT WAS STILL DRIVEABLE THEN BUT JUST YESTERDAY 2/9/12
I CAME TO A STOP SIGN IT WOULD NOT MOVE IN DRIVE SO I PUT IT IN DRIVE 2 AND IT MOVED SO I WAS ABLE TO GET IT HOME NOW I HAVE NO DRIVE1 AND NO REGULAR DRIVE ONLY WORKS IN DRIVE 2 AND ALSO NOTICED TRANS FLUID IN MY RADIATOR OVER FLOW TANK

It sounds like your transmission is going out.

 

well the trans fluid in the overflow tank means that the radiatior has an internal leak thats allowing the trans fluid to mix with coolant...replace the rad and flush the trans fluid as a start

If you are seeing trans fluid in your overflow tank you must have a trans cooler leak. If that has happened flushing is a must as well as flushing the cooling system also. Reality is anti freeze will destroy a trans quickly. Fixing the leak into the cooling system from the trans oil cooler is also a must . Problem is anti freeze will also leak into the trans and that can and will destroy the clutches quickly. Sorry to say it may already be too late

 

If you wanted to, you could bypass the cooler in the radiator (be sure to cap it so antifreeze won't leak out) and put an external cooler in place.

A big one like this should do the job...

Put it in front of the a/c evaporator, better yet, have a reputable shop put it in.

If you act fast, you might save the trans from a rebuild. 500 bucks here to flush and fill both systems and put an external trans cooler in could save you 1500 in the next week or so...

 

Thanks for the info about the cooler but I purchased a new radiator and installed it
But your information is appreciated I will remember it incase I have to replace the radiator again
