trans case shifter
Welcome to the forum
What year Ranger?
The electric shifter on the transfer case is the same on all years but the 4x4 Controller is not
Have a look here to see shift motor: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...-motor.123542/
The 4th picture down shows 3 of the 4 transfer case positions, shift rod its pointed at 2H(2WD)
Neutral is missing
Neutral is across from 2H, between 4H and 4L
5th and 6th pictures show the contact wheel and contacts, the wheel moves with transfer case shift rod, this is how the Controller knows when to stop turning the motor, there are 4 contacts and 1 feed, so 5 wires
Each contact is one position, i.e. 2H, 4H, N, 4L are the 4 positions
The controller knows which contact is for 2H, and 4H and 4L but wasn't programmed for Neutral, I think because someone might shift into Neutral by mistake and..............well hurt themselves or others so the Ford Lawyers said NO to Neutral, lol, joking, not sure why it wasn't included
The shift motor is a 12volt motor like power window motor, 12v/ground makes motor turn one way, ground/12v makes it turn the other way, window up window down, transfer case clockwise, transfer case counter clockwise
Shift rod can't turn 360deg, so it turns from 2H counter-clockwise to 4L, then clockwise back to 2H
To build a Neutral shift you need a dual relay set up(like controller has) to power the motor
And you need a Light(LED) to tell you when transfer case contact is in Neutral position, like control has for dash lights
In the first picture you can see the Yellow and Orange wires running to the motor(motor power) and the 5 wires running to the contact wheel, there is also an 8th wire, brown, for electric clutch, don't need to use that its for "shift on the fly"
You will need to pull the shift motor or get one from a wrecking yard to test with
Then test the contacts
On most years the Yellow/white strip wire on the contact wheel is the power or Ground, they used both, it would make contact with one of the other 4 wires, A, B, C, or D for each transfer case position, sending that power or ground to the controller
Find out which is the Neutral position and high jack that wire and the yellow/white with 2 more relays
You will supply a light in the cab with either 12v or ground so it lights up when transfer case is in neutral
If you should turn the key back on once in neutral the 4x4 Controller will shift transfer case back to its original position, it "remembers", lol, not really, just sees the position of the shift **** or buttons when it powers up, and will see contact wheel is not in correct position so will correct it back to 2WD if thats where **** is
So an on/off/on toggle switch for clockwise, counter-clockwise, 4 relays and an LED, and you should be fine, maybe $30 in parts
Diagram here, lower right is the contracts in the shift motor: https://ww2-secure.justanswer.com/up..._210346_a2.jpg
pin 6 in diagram is the common wire for the contacts, can be 12v, 5v or Ground depending on year
One of the other 4, A, B, C or D, will send that Common signal back to Controller on its wire as contact wheel moves, this tells controller the position of transfer case
